The plot of Dolmen is very metaphorical and is about “learning the language of the cosmos”. This process is difficult because the individual elements of the galaxy’s alphabet are hard to find, and in the process of searching, we still have to fight to survive. The creators’ goal was to create a “lovecraft” story that will show PC gamers what the darkest secret in the universe is. Another encouragement to watch Dolmen was the announcement of a story inspired by the work of H.P. Lovecraft – a marketing trick that has been widely abused recently. The conception of the world and the scenario here are rather cliché, we can even say that they are generic. The story will take us to the planet Revion Prime, rich in the title Dolmen Download. They are crystals of great power, whose skilful use allows contact and travel between dimensions. There is a catastrophe on the planet, and our task is to find out what exactly happened and prevent new threats.
As you might guess, Revion Prime has been taken over by bloodthirsty monsters. Playing the role of a trained and seasoned commander, we will face not only all kinds of monsters, but also humanoid characters. So there will be acid-spitting arachnids, dogs with big teeth, twisted mutants or ninja warriors equipped with futuristic armor. I have to admit that the design of the game doesn’t appeal to me particularly well. I couldn’t help but think I’d seen all of this before. In the case of souls, however, these are secondary issues, as the most important thing is the gameplay.

The creators of Massive Work Studio set out to create souls on a small scale. In Download Dolmen, we find everything that we find in other representatives of the genre, but compressed to a modest size. This applies to literally every element – the amount of weapons available, skills, attack options, mechanics, number of bosses, and even the length of the game itself. I finished my adventure with Dolmen in less than 12 hours, and it should be noted that I am not a soul enthusiast, able to defeat the boss with just his sight.
We start the game with a tutorial explaining the most important aspects of the game. Equipped with melee weapons, we have two types of attacks at our disposal – fast and powerful. Added to this is the possibility of a jump attack, which in my case – I opted for a slow but powerful two-handed weapon – was completely unnecessary due to the excessively slow speed. Attacks and dodges consume stamina bar points, so you don’t want to run out of steam.
We also have the ability to block hits, but the bosses, which are by far the most difficult group of opponents, will hit us with blows that are impossible to block. So I quickly abandoned parrying learning in favor of more effective dodges. Dolmen free pc also offers the ability to use firearms, which can be treated as a secondary weapon. Its usefulness, however, is questionable. The damage dealt by arrows is too low to impress standard opponents, let alone bosses.

An interesting idea that turned out to be average in practice due to a lack of significant impact on gameplay.

For defeated opponents, we are rewarded with points for purchasing more attributes and crafting materials. By winning back-to-back fights, we become stronger, and our weapons are stronger, standard. Sometimes he can go crazy to the point of turning the perspective 180 degrees, turning our backs on the rival. Needless to say, how frustrating it can be to fight bosses. Similar situations happen when we dodge and the camera gives us such a view that we have no idea what just happened. And of course, things like that happen even in the best matches, but in Dolmen full version, it happened to me a lot.

Of course, the boss fights are the most interesting. Each duel will require several approaches to gradually learn the enemy’s attacks and behavior. Their difficulty level isn’t extremely high, and in my case, only one boss proved to be more challenging. After a double-digit number of approaches and hundreds of delicious epithets directed at him, he finally came across the mat. The opponents’ drawings are done correctly and each one will surprise us in their own way. But I felt like they were too squarely based on the premise – jump, punch, jump, monster. Without a doubt, patterns are Dolmen’s greatest asset.
It should be noted that the game offers the possibility to fight the selected duel again. All you have to do is collect 3 Dolmen Crystals from the opponents to be able to summon the given boss again. The ingredients available in several grades will allow us to determine its strength. Of course, we will always use the unique ones, and the commons will remain fallow. When creating equipment, you should also pay attention to the technology we use.
The type of equipment we use will define our skills on one of the three trees. However, I was very skeptical about the whole thing, not caring too much about the details. I also didn’t feel like going the extra mile in search of the most valuable ingredients, forging objects from what I had on hand. As you can see, this turned out to be enough to complete the game without any problems.
On the technical side
Dolmen Download looks pretty generic, and that goes for both the game world design and the quality of the visuals. A hodgepodge typical of sci-fi climates. Moreover, you can see that this is an AA production with a limited budget. The whole thing looks neat, but without the fireworks, and even worse, the unique style. The biggest flaws stand out during the cutscenes, which certainly won’t captivate you with their glamour. Again, I’ll mention the tricky camera work and the short playtime.
